The Best Way To Change To Change Color With Digital Images To Black And White
Many photographers learned their trade using film, where filters were used to enhance black and white photos, then manipulated again within the darkroom process. Not only did this work well but for many decades this was the basis for all photography, from black and white to color from negative film to color transparencies.
These process was simplified a lot using digital photography were color photos can be easily converted to black and white using simple processing techniques inbuilt in the camera or using software, no need of darkroom process was required for this conversion to similar quality pictures taking one tenth of the time.
The RGB component of the photos were converted in the ratio of 30:60:10. This is equivalent to 10 percent of the value being blue, 60 percent from green, and 30 percent from red. The green component in the black and white converted photos will be brighter and the blue component will become the darkest. Also that conversion to the grayscale is not the same as desaturation, which reduces all colors to gray.
You cannot expect that the ratio given above will meet all kinds of conversion but this can be sufficient in most cases A good example is red, a receding color generating foreshortening in an image, can be brightened to uphold contrast in a black & white image by changing the ratio, or weighting that favors the red channel, over say, a downplay on a green background channel.
A software component called Channel Mixer is available for easy conversion of color by adjusting the ratio of the RGB components or changing the weight of the pixel component. Most of the photo process software available in the market has facilities for this conversion alternatively you can download free software that equals the quality. Although, it also can generate output to monochrome images by maximizing the adjustment to one end of its scale.
This will alter the overall exposure of the image as well, bringing the image into appropriate contrast and brightness ratios without further adjustment. With some conversion tools it is also possible to alter the balance of yellow, magenta, and cyan conversions (photo darkroom basics) for an even greater range of effects in black and white.
Toning is taking the black & white image and making it a one-color tone. This includes the sepia toned image as well as cyan blue, yellow green, or gold toned images. Similar types of conversion is available for toning digital images but you need better creative talents for obtaining what you need.
Toning an image is converting from color to black & white within the RGB mode, and must be completed before toning. Contrast of the image should be reduced for giving more brightness to the shadow and then toning will give more quality to the resulting image. Black most often remains dark and even blacker when a digital image is toned. If there is detail within the darker or black portion of the image then a brightener tool adjustment made to bring the detail out is done, before the tone process.
